Award Overview

The CIBC Entrance Awards for Indigenous Students are available for Indigenous Students entering their first year of studies in a post-secondary program that is at least 6 months in duration. Students will be selected based on their written essay. Up to 5 awards will be distributed equally across the following Schools: Access, Arts & Science, Business, Health & Human Services, Sport & Exercise Education, and Trades & Technology. Proof of Indigenous ancestry is required.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicant must:

  • Be a student with Indigenous ancestry
  • Be entering first year of post-secondary level studies in the Fall 2021 semester
  • Be enrolled full time in a post-secondary program at Camosun that is at least 6-months in length and leads to a credential (certificate, diploma or degree). Note: Technology Access programs (6 months or greater) are eligible programs.
  • Submit proof of Indigenous ancestry
  • Submit student written essay, up to 1000 words, answering the following question: Who or what inspired you to purse a post-secondary education? How will your education serve you, your family, or your community?

Selection Process

  • Recipients will be selected based on satisfying all award criteria and student written essay.
  • The Awards Committee will review applications and recommend recipients. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • The successful recipients will be notified by email no later than 6 weeks after the award application closing date.
  • The award will be applied to the successful recipients’ tuition account for the Fall semester. If all tuition is paid in full, the award will be mailed as a cheque to the recipient.

  1. I am a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada and have a valid Canadian Social Insurance Number. Successful applicants will be required to provide their Social Insurance Number. International students, if eligible, will not be required to provide a valid social insurance number.
  2. I have answered all questions completely and accurately.
  3. I consent to Camosun College Financial Aid & Awards staff checking or verifying information on this application. This may include the exchange of information within Camosun College and with external organizations, such as provincial or territorial student aid offices.
  4. If I give answers that are not true or if changed circumstances make me ineligible, I will be required to pay back all or part of the award or bursary I received.
  5. If am receiving income assistance, student loan/grant or other government funding, I am required to notify the appropriate government office of the amount of award or bursary funding I have been granted.
  6. I consent that the Financial Aid & Awards office may release application information to the Camosun College Foundation Office and the award or bursary donor.
  7. If I receive $500 or more in award or bursary funds in one year, a statement for income tax purposes will be sent to me by Camosun College. I will ensure my mailing address is kept up to date.
  8. I understand that award or bursary funds will be applied to any outstanding tuition fees. Residual bursary funds will be provided to me.

Acceptable Documentation for Proof of Indigenous Ancestry
  • a certified copy of a Status or Treaty card
  • a certified copy of a Métis card
  • a certified copy of a Nunavut Trust Certification card, roll number of any other proof accepted by Inuit communities
  • a certified copy of a Nisga'a card
  • proof that an ancestor's name has been entered in the Indian Register according to the Indian Act or on the Band list of an individual Indian Band or on the Inuit roll
  • evidence that an ancestor received a land grant or scrip grant under the Manitoba Act or the Dominion of Canada Lands Act
  • written confirmation of ancestry from the Department of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada
  • written confirmation of membership in a Band by a Band Council or Tribal Council which has enacted its own membership code
  • a declaration by the applicant attesting to Indigenous ancestry, supplemented by letters supporting the declaration from an official of a recognized Indigenous organization
  • a certified copy of official documentation attesting to membership in a Native American tribe
